Persistent dry cough can mean early illness. This could be a warning sign of the flu. Flu viruses can also cause dry cough with wheezing and tightness in the chest. You may want to cough up phlegm or mucus. However, in the early stages of flu, wet or productive cough is uncommon.
If you have preexisting respiratory issues, such as emphysema, asthma, or COPD, you may need to contact your doctor to prevent any complications due to the flu. Also, consult your physician if you notice colored phlegm or foul-smelling. The common lung complications can include pneumonia and bronchitis.
You can take cough medicine to soothe your cough. Keeping your throat hydrated with plenty of water and caffeine-free beverages can also help.
