EBV and malignancies
EBV can cause Burkitt’s lymphoma. In patients with severe T cell deficiency, especially HIV patients and organ transplant patients, mononucleosis can cause Hodgkin lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, natural killer cell lymphoma, primary CNS lymphomas, lymphoproliferative disorders, sarcomas, and T cell lymphomas. Burkitt lymphoma is endemic in Africa, and 100% of cases are associated with EBV.
X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome
In this syndrome, there is T cell and natural killed cell deficiency, both of which are important for tackling EBV infection. It is a type of lymphoproliferative disorder.
