Shape and size
The mass of papillary carcinoma may be impalpable or become a nodule up to 5cm in size. On palpation, it feels smooth or bosselated, spherical with defined edges. Follicular carcinoma also has a similar presentation of a smooth, spherical mass with defined edges. Anaplastic carcinoma usually has an irregular shape with an indistinct surface, and it spreads beyond the thyroid gland. It may grow very big, sometimes interfering with the movements of the neck. Medullary carcinoma is usually a firm, smooth and distinct lump.
