Are All Cold Sores Herpes?
Herpes simplex viruses are of two types (HSV-1 and HSV-2), and both can cause cold sores of the following types: (2)
- Herpes Labialis: This is the most common type of cold sore. It appears on or around the lips, usually as a cluster of small, fluid-filled blisters that may be painful or itchy.
- Herpes Whitlow: It appears on the fingers or thumbs, usually due to touching the lips or mouth while the virus is active.
- Herpes Gladiatorum: This type is common among athletes, particularly wrestlers, and appears on the face, neck, or shoulders. It is spread through skin-to-skin contact.
- Ocular Herpes: They appear on the eyelids or around the eyes and can cause swelling, redness, and pain. It can lead to scarring or vision problems if left untreated.
- Eczema Herpeticum: This type of cold sore occurs in people with eczema, a condition that causes dry, itchy skin. The herpes simplex virus can infect the skin, causing a painful rash.
- Gingivostomatitis: They affect the mouth, gums, and throat and are common in children. It can cause fever, swollen glands, and difficulty eating or drinking.
