Understanding Cold Sores

Are Cold Sores Contagious?

Yes, cold sores are contagious. The virus can be easily spread from person to person through direct contact with the fluid from a cold sore, as well as through sharing items such as utensils, razors, towels, or lipstick.

They are most contagious when in active oozing phase, but can also be spread even if no visible sores are present. Once you are infected with the herpes virus, it remains in the body and can cause recurring cold sores. It’s important to avoid close contact with someone who has a cold sore to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. You should also avoid touching your eyes or genitals, as the virus can also cause sores in those areas.
