What Are Different Types Of Hives (Urticaria)?
There are different types of urticaria based on their underlying causes and characteristics. (2)
- Acute Urticaria: It is the most common type of urticaria that lasts for less than six weeks. It is usually caused by an allergic reaction to certain foods, medications, insect bites, or infections.
- Chronic Urticaria: It lasts for more than six weeks and can persist for months or even years. The underlying cause of chronic urticaria is often difficult to determine. However, it can be associated with autoimmune disorders, thyroid disease, or infections.
- Physical Urticaria: It is triggered by physical stimuli such as pressure, heat, cold, or sun exposure. The most common types of physical urticaria include dermatographism, cholinergic urticaria, and cold urticaria.
- Contact Urticaria: It occurs when the skin comes in contact with a substance that causes an allergic reaction, such as latex, animal dander, or certain plants.
- Hereditary Angioedema: It is a rare genetic condition characterized by recurrent episodes of swelling in different parts of the body, including the face, throat, and abdomen.
- Idiopathic Urticaria: It is a type of chronic urticaria where the underlying cause is unknown. It is sometimes referred to as chronic spontaneous urticaria.
