Skin Tags Complications
While skin tags are generally harmless and do not require treatment, they can sometimes cause complications or discomfort. These may include:
- Irritation and discomfort: Skin tags can become irritated and cause discomfort when they rub against clothing, jewelry, or other skin surfaces. This can sometimes lead to redness, tenderness, and even bleeding.
- Inflammation and infection: Occasionally, skin tags may become inflamed, which can cause increased redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, an inflamed skin tag may become infected, leading to further complications such as pus formation and increased tenderness.
- Bleeding: Skin tags are attached to the skin by a thin stalk of tissue, and this stalk can sometimes become twisted or irritated, leading to bleeding. While skin tag bleeding is typically minor and stops on its own, persistent bleeding may require medical attention.
- Cosmetic concerns: Skin tags can be unsightly and may cause cosmetic concerns, especially if they are located in highly visible body areas, such as the face or neck. Many people feel self-conscious about their appearance due to skin tags and may seek treatment for cosmetic reasons.
- Trauma: Skin tags can be accidentally torn or removed during activities such as shaving – resulting in bleeding, pain, and potential infection.
- Psychological impact: Although skin tags are benign, some people may experience psychological distress or anxiety due to their presence, especially if they are particularly bothersome or cosmetically unappealing.
