How Is Cellulitis Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of cellulitis is primarily based on clinical examination and patient history, but several diagnostic tests can be performed to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other possible conditions. Here are some of the diagnostic tests commonly used for cellulitis:
- Blood tests: These tests may be performed to check for signs of infection, such as elevated C-reactive protein and white blood cell count levels.
- Cultures: Samples of skin or wound discharge are sent to a laboratory for bacterial culture and sensitivity testing to identify the causative organism and determine the appropriate antibiotic treatment.
- Imaging tests: X-rays, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to assess the extent of infection and rule out other conditions, such as abscesses or deep vein thrombosis.
