Psoriasis Signs and Symptoms

Psoriasis can affect any part of the body, but it commonly occurs on the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, and genitals. In some cases, psoriasis can also affect the nails, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. The symptoms of psoriasis can vary from person to person, and may include:

  • Red patches on the superficial layer of the skin covered with thick, silvery scales
  • Dry and cracked skin that may bleed
  • Itching, burning, or soreness in affected areas
  • Pain or stiffness in joints
  • Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails
  • Small scaling spots (commonly seen in children)
  • Swollen and stiff joints
  • Pink or reddish spots on the skin with scaly borders (known as guttate psoriasis)
  • White or silvery scales on the scalp, known as scalp psoriasis

Symptoms of psoriasis can come and go in cycles, with periods of remission followed by flare-ups. Some people may experience symptoms that are severe and widespread, while others may only have a few patches of affected skin. If you experience these symptoms, consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
