Substance abuse
Depressive disorders are frequently associated with substance abuse, and patients use these substances as a clear-out method to cope with the emotional stress associated with clinical depression. They may rely on alcohol and sedatives or start consuming illegal drugs, and even prescription drugs illegally sold without a prescription.
While substance abuse is not part of the diagnostic criteria of depression, it is commonly associated with it. What’s more, substance abuse would cause an extra burden to the social impairments and the aggressive behavior in these patients. Substance abuse is more common in patient with previous addictions. In any case, it is considered a complication of the underlying problem and requires urgent medical attention.
