Potential Complications of Infected Blisters

- Infection: Blisters can create an opening in the skin, which can allow bacteria or other germs to enter and cause an infection. Signs of an acute infection may include redness, warmth, tenderness, and pus.
- Impaired healing: If a blister is not properly cared for, it can take longer to heal. This can lead to prolonged discomfort and increase the risk of infection.
- Scarring: If a blister is large or deep, it can cause scarring once it heals. This is more likely to occur if the blister is repeatedly irritated or if it is located in an area where there is a lot of tension on the skin.
- Cellulitis: It is a bacterial infection of the skin and the tissues underneath. If a blister becomes infected, the infection can spread and cause cellulitis. Symptoms of cellulitis include redness, swelling, warmth, and pain.
- Allergic reaction: In rare cases, a blister can be a sign of a side effect or an allergic reaction to a medication, food, or other substance. If you have a blister that is accompanied by itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
