In benign tumors generally, the health of the patient is not affected much, but mucinous cystadenomas can cause cachexia due to substantial protein loss in a large tumor. Malignant tumors can cause sudden weight loss of the patient over a short period of time due to cytokines released by cancer cells, and the gastrointestinal involvement either due to metastasis or pressure effects on the digestive tract.
