Cold sores can be easily spread through close contact with someone who has an active outbreak. While cold sores have no cure, several steps can help prevent them from occurring:

  1. Avoid close contact with people who have active cold sores. This includes avoiding kissing, sharing utensils, or using the same towels or other personal items.
  2. Avoid touching your face (and other affected areas), and wash your hands frequently.
  3. Use sunscreen on your lips and face to prevent outbreaks triggered by exposure to the sun.
  4. Manage stress, as stress can weaken your immune system and trigger outbreaks.
  5. Avoid foods that trigger outbreaks, such as chocolate, nuts, and citrus fruits.
  6. Take antiviral medication as your doctor prescribes if you are prone to frequent outbreaks.
  7. Keep your immune system healthy by getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly.
